All contestants competing in the last sixteen and quarter-final stage of the 2008-09 championship provided a splendid display of amateur billiards, the likes of which has not been seen for many years. The depth of strength in this year’s championship entry and a well-balanced draw promised competition of the highest standard. We were not disappointed. The prestige of The English and the personal pride in taking part is enough for some, but to notch a step forward on previous performance is in itself something to be proud of.

On a weekend which saw five doubles and no less than sixteen centuries the Derbyshire spectators were treated to a display of English Amateur Billiards at its best. Notable performances came from Martin Goodwill, Jonathan Bagley - who came back from a huge first session deficit to defeat Phil Mumford - and a notable performance on his first appearance in the English from Geoff Brassington, the keen and highly competitive lad from Cheshire.

A weekend to remember and a credit to all those who took part, the providers of the facilities, the hard work of the officials, and not least, those keen and loyal playing members who showed their skills.
