The billiards committee of the E.A.B.A. is always receptive to new ideas and always on the lookout for ideas to stimulate interest and enhance the enjoyment of its playing membership. The introduction of the 'United Kingdom Billiards Open' with its new format is one such idea.
This is the first 'Open' tournament ventured on by the Association. Its 'U.K. Open' title brings into competition our friends from Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland, Scotland & Wales. It also brings together Amateurs and Professionals from both codes to fully integrate cuemen in an effort to share and enjoy a festival of billiards.
The format is new, it is experimental and it is exciting. It is structured to give each player a more accurate measure of his/her performance; to keep the players on their toes, and for each player to try and get as many points as possible out of each segment. Set out below is an example of the scoring format: In the fixed target/time format games 1 point is awarded for each 50 points scored and a bonus of 1 point for the winner.
In the short format 1 point will be awarded for each 50 points scored in each game.
Example:
| 1st Qualifying match | Player 'A' | 300 (7 pts) | Player 'B' | 220 (4 pts) |
| 2nd Qualifying Match | Player 'A' | 175 (3pts) | Player 'C' | 300 (7pts) |
| 3rd Qualifying Match | Player 'A' | 150 (3pts) | Player 'D' | 75 (1pt) |
| Player 'A' | 105 (2pts) | Player 'D' | 150 (3pts) | |
| Player 'A' | 150 (3pts) | Player 'D' | 120 (2pts) |
Total accrued points for Player 'A' - 18 points
In the event of a tie for the top 16 places the total aggregated scoring points will decide the qualifiers.
