The Kingsman Trophy (Northern Ireland Juniors v England Juniors)

The Reading Rooms, Bangor, North Down

Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd January, 2006

This year's 'Kingsman Trophy' event gave excitement all the way. Level points at the half way stage looked ominously like a tie being the likely result at the end. However, a 3-0 win in the short game by Jamie Edwards gave England the edge and the Norwich man a lift after his first day defeat by the up and coming Darren Dornan.

Going into the last two long format games England had to win one to retain the trophy. Stuart Dexter could not match the strength of Christian Kirk and went down 300 - 145 leaving the decider and a grandstand finish between Steve Kerr and Terry McDowell. This nip and tuck match between two stylish and confident young men kept the spectators, young, and the not so young, on the edge of their seats throughout. This had been a very special weekend experience for Steve Kerr and he was not going to be denied. He held his game together with great aplomb and nerve; two attributes which will give him strength in the future, and secured a great win for England.

All credit due to the Irish lads; Darren Dornan, Christian Kirk, Richie McComiskey, and Terry McDowell, and the English team of Stuart Dexter, Jamie Edwards, Steve Kerr and Dominic Mulhall with their managers Sean McGiven and Roger Clarke for giving us all a splendid weekend's entertainment.
