The Friendly Cup (Northern Ireland v England)

The Reading Rooms, Bangor, North Down

Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd January, 2006

The annual 'Friendly Cup' international between Northern Ireland and England was once again a splendid example of precision, artistry and friendship between the two nations. The tenth anniversary of the event attracted a guest list of seventy-five to the celebration meal held at The Royal Hotel, Bangor, North Down. Players, officials, families and supporters joined together in harmony to enjoy the good food and 'craic' which has always been a traditional accompaniment to our meetings on the Friendly Cup weekend.

Derick Townend, the England team manager, said in his after dinner speech, that when the England team arrived in Belfast for the inaugural event in 1996 there had been a rather different climate. Outside events have never impeded or marred the progress of the great bond of friendship which has developed between the two billiards associations over the past ten years. The sporting arena has brought together two international teams that have nurtured all that is good in sporting endeavour. Competition, achievement, and good natured rivalry; but most of all, mutual respect and friendship.

The international match, as usual, consisted of senior and junior segments. Both segments ran in tandem giving the spectators ample opportunity to observe both experienced and aspiring players. The Friendly Cup once again saw England players dominate the play from start to finish. Notable performances from Rob Hall, John Mullane and David Nichols gave an indication of the strength of English billiards and the security of its future. For the Irish only Roy Lattimer matched the strength of the English pack. Solid wins against Steve Crosland and Phil Welham showed the level of Roy's improvement in technique and match-play since his recruitment to international duty. Unfortunately, Davey Pogue was unable to repeat his outstanding performance in the 'Triangular' at Carlow last October. A run-out of 100 by Bill Andress when Davey was on course for a famous win was a sickener for the indefatigable Irishman.
