England were host to the latest Tri-Nation billiards tournament, and were no doubt anxious to atone for their poor showing in last year's event where they finished in last place. The tournament was staged over the week-end of 20th-21st November 2004, at Sealand Leisure, Queensferry, and the home team restored some national pride, winning by a comfortable margin from the Republic of Ireland, with Northern Ireland, on this occasion, finishing third.
The Republic, defending the title they won for the first time in Glengormley last November, were missing their star player, Eugene Hughes, who was taking part in the IBSF Seniors' Snooker Championship in Holland. However, the other teams were also weakened as England took the field without their No.1, Norman Routledge, and Northern Ireland were lacking Paddy Donnelly and Tony Buttimer.
The teams alternately played games of 90 minutes duration and sets of 3 x 150-up. The latter were worth one point per game to the winner, and in a change to last year, the timed games were reduced in value from three points to two.
The games were centered on the club's four "match" tables which are fitted to exacting professional specifications, and this may account for the general absence of high breaks. The notable exception to this was the set of three 150-up games played by England's Darren Kell, who made runs of 55, 123, and 150, all unfinished, the latter being the first time in these events that a game has been concluded in a single visit. The only other century of the competition (101) also came from an English player, Phil Mumford, in one of his 150-up games.
After the first two rounds of 90 minute games, it was clear that the championship would go to either England or the Republic, as each of these teams defeated Northern Ireland in the 90 minute games by 10-2 and 12-0 respectively. However, England's clash with the Republic in the next round of 150-up games resulted in a 15-3 win for the home team, and established an advantage they would not relinquish. Although the Republic later held England to a 6-6 draw in the timed matches, England ensured overall victory by an overwhelming 16-2 win over Northern Ireland in the final session.
