Event Three: Breaks Snooker Club, Lincoln

Michael Donnelly (Middlesbrough) won his second Junior Ranking tournament of the season at Lincoln on 7th November 2004, and with a top break of 126, he also increased his personal match-play record by one point. Apart from his century break, Donnelly also had runs of 69, 61 and 53 during the course of the day.

Good performances also came from Dominic Mulhall (Middlesbrough) and Jamie Edwards (Norwich), the former making breaks of 65, 59 and 55, before losing to Donnelly in the quarter-finals, and Edwards recording runs of 63 and 50, his involvement also being ended by Donnelly in the semi-finals.

Mulhall impressed in his early matches by compiling one-hour totals of 431 and 445 in his first two games, his quarter-final against Donnelly therefore attracting more than usual interest. However, Donnelly was in unstoppable form, his 126 break and three others over forty taking him to a 525-232 victory, easily the highest scoring match of the day.

In the final Donnelly met his fellow-Teessider and travelling companion, Kyle Cunningham, and without any of the spectacular form shown in earlier rounds, he led from the start to complete a comfortable 336-240 result.

The field of 23 players was the best so far this season, and included representatives from the growing number of junior coaches throughout the country. The deceptively small number of entries concealing a steadily increasing foundation for junior billiards which bodes well for the future of the sport.
