The Friendly Cup (England v Northern Ireland)

Sealand Leisure, Queensferry, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd January, 2005.

England's billiard players overwhelmed their counterparts from Northern Ireland in the latest meeting between these teams at Sealand Leisure in Queensferry over the week-end of 22nd-23rd January 2005. Playing the usual format involving games of 500-up (2 points) and 3 x 150-up (1 point each) England reached an almost unassailable lead of 19-3 by the close of play on Saturday evening.

The challenge matches between these teams was established in 1996 on the initiative of Derick Townend, who also donated some silverware to be awarded to the winners. Uncertain of a suitable name for this trophy, his wife Peggy came up with the title of "The Friendly Cup" which, as it transpired, became most appropriate. The Saturday night sessions during these events have become legendary for their cordiality, which from a practical viewpoint, has traditionally worked to the advantage of the Irish. However on this occasion, and despite some players not seeing their beds until 6.00am, there would be no Irish come-back on the final day, the English winning all the remaining games to complete a 37-3 victory.
