Haverhill Snooker & Bowl, Suffolk, was a new venue for the Amateur Billiards Circuit, but the manager, Keith Pauley, was well-known to the organisers, having previously been host to similar billiard tournaments at the Newmarket Snooker Centre. In addition to a generous donation of £500 towards the prize money, competitors were impressed with the arrangements made for this event, with all 18 tables brushed and ironed, and the room reserved for their exclusive use throughout the day.

There were a total of 48 entries, which surprisingly did not include any of the top six players prior to this tournament, giving an opportunity for the rest of the field to gain some ground. Phil Welham (Kings Lynn) made the most of this chance, and in winning the event, elevated himself into fourth place in the latest ranking list. In the final he defeated Lincoln's Robert Hall, who was making his first appearance at this stage of a senior EABA tournament. Hall had previously impressed by defeating Steve Crosland and Brian Harvey in the semi and quarter-final rounds respectively, but could not equal the scoring power of Welham, who, with the competition's highest break of 150 in this match, cruised to a 445-141 win.

In his semi-final, Welham had to overcome the challenge of Eddie Fielding (Lancaster) who is currently having his most successful season on the circuit. Welham's 119 point victory proved less difficult than his task in the previous round, where, after an hour's play, he just managed to scrape a win against Exeter's Bill Andress by the narrowest possible margin, 308-307!
