Various estimates have been put forward respecting the distance traversed by the average player during a game of billiards, and we have seen it stated that two miles per hour is about correct. But in our opinion this estimate is excessive, and is undoubtedly at variance with what scientific evidence there is on the point. Last year two amateurs played for twenty-five consecutive hours, and a pedometer carried by the winner registered twenty-four and a quarter miles. And as the gentleman who won scored 5,190 points, it is evident that not much time was lost by stoppages for rest and refreshment. Altogether, it seems, that one mile per hour would be nearer the mark than two, but it is obvious that the distance would vary greatly according to the rate of individual play. Some day, perhaps, a number of players will be interested enough in the subject to arrange for a test of a comprehensive type, as it would be worth knowing exactly how much walking exercise is taken by a billiard player.
