Round the Regions

Midland Counties Billiards League

From John Smith

The Midland Counties Billiards League held their annual one-day tournament and prize giving at the Corn Exchange Snooker Club, Derby.

Local trio David Rees, Ken Hobbs, and Colin Routledge, all emerged undefeated from their round-robin group matches. In the fourth section, Alan Marsden, Stan Day. and Ellis Lloyd, finished with the same number of wins. Marsden went through with just a six point aggregate advantage over Day.

The semi-finals saw Routledge comfortably dispose of Rugby's Alan Marsden, whilst Rees survived a tough battle before overcoming Ken Hobbs. David Rees played very well in the final making breaks of 102 and 62 for a 292 -154 victory.

Those who did not qualify from the round-robin groups went into a, "Plate," which was won by Stan Day with wins over Richie Evans, John Smith, and, narrowly, Ellis Lloyd.

There will be once again seven teams competing in the league during the 1995/96 season. The line up sees just one change from last year with the Rugby 'B' team replacing Banbury. Defending Champions, Derby, begin the new season with a tough home match with neighbouring Nottingham, whilst newcomers, Rugby 'B' start with a home match against the 1994 league winners Stoke-on-Trent.

Thank you John Smith. All the best for a successful and entertaining season.

Orme Billiards League

From Jim McCann

The Darley Dale and District Orme Billiards League presentation evening took place recently at the Whitworth Hotel, Darley Dale. League winners were the Whitworth No.2.pairing of Jim McCann and Les Cooke. McCann also took the trophy for the highest break, an effort of 134. McCann and Cooke also the Billiards Doubles, the Team Trophy, and the Billiards/Snooker combined trophy. Sweeping the board will lead to a big handicap increase and it may be rather harder for the pair this coming season.

Trophies and prizes were presented by Darley Dale Councillor, Phil Rogers.

Thanks Jim. Seems that you have two-man teams playing off handicap. Readers might be interested in details of your league system.

Carrol Walters

Some time ago the BQR made the silly mistake of confusing Carrol with Carol. Roy writes that Carrol had always been a useful billiard player, but about 18 months ago he got himself a new cue and since then his game has improved quite a lot. He has made several century breaks and just a few weeks ago won the Sandford Orcas scratch championship beating Steve Warren - a good player - in the final. BQR is not the first to get it wrong. Carrol has had this name for about fifty years and thinks that it is much too late to bother about changing it. In any case why should he. Thanks Roy.
