EASB National County Championship

Ten counties entered teams. The strongest teams seemed to be those of Yorkshire and Staffs & West Midlands. The other teams were not far behind and many well-known amateur players were involved. The Staffs team of Peter Shelley, Tony Keeling, and Ken Shirley proved to be too good for both Yorks and a strong Cambs team in the Northern Region, and looked clear favourites for the championship. Surrey would have seemed to have the edge over Brian Harvey's men in the first round of the Southern Section but it didn't work out that way, Harvey's total of 321 against Chris Ross taking them to a win by just 48 points. Kent's win over a strong Devon team was the upset of the tournament only Bill Andress managing to win, whilst Dick Watts was well beaten by C. Carpenter who is not such a well-known amateur. A good win Mr. Carpenter.

Kent could not repeat the performance against Wessex who thus went to the Final v Staffs as second favourites.

Ken Shirley had a good win to give Staffs just the start they needed, but Michael White pulled off a surprise win over Peter Shelley, and Brian Harvey wrapped it up with a big win over Tony Keeling. Ken Shirley and Brian Harvey were unbeaten throughout the competition.
