Players at the Grand Masters (L-R): Jim McCann, Malcolm Pilkington, Peter Shelley, John Smith and Bem French.

The Final, held at the Pockets Club, Kidderminster, had a remarkable finish. Bill Andress and Peter Shelley were neck and neck throughout the whole match until, with just a minute or two left, the Stoke player, held an advantage of just 50. Bill Andress is well known as a rapid scorer but he could not quite manage it this time being in play and needing just one more stroke for victory at the bell. It was hard luck for the Exeter man but Shelley is a worthy champion and had played excellent billiards throughout the tournament. Shelley had a break of 118 in the quarter-finals, and breaks of 200 and 132 in the semis. Andress had a 124 against his old rival Dick Watts in the quarters, and a century in the semis. The only other century came from David Rees (106) against Shelley in the first round (Midlands) There were 31 entrants and the standard was good with many players making breaks between 50 and 100.
