Round The Regions

Spalding and District

Ross Porter

The Consti A team head the league with 89-5 points from 21 games. Consti B are second with 84. The league is wide open with only 10 points separating the top six teams. Professional snooker player Mark Gray is top of the averages (11-8) The century has not yet been topped but there has been many breaks over 50.

Billiards seems to do very well in Lincolnshire. There are 16 teams in the league and Ross reports that there are nine new players this year, mostly snooker players who are enjoying the longer game and the challenge of billiards.

Eastern Counties Billiard League

Phil Welham
Huntingdon regain Title

Five teams contested this year's league championship. Huntingdon regained the championship they last won two years ago, whilst last years champions, Norwich 'A,' were runners up. The highest break was 110 by Albert Salisbury and the highest score (one hour) was 491 by Phil Welham. The Mark Wildman award for the most improved player went to John Bensley of Norwich 'A.' The league will be expanded next season by the inclusion of teams from Raunds Northants) and Bourne(Lincs.) The committee are hoping that there will also be teams from Bury St Edmonds, Ely, and Boston., The individual championship attracted 32 entries and was played at the Maltings Club, King's Lynn. Phil Welham retained the title and became the first player to win the championship twice. John Carman won the Plate.

An encouraging feature was the presence of ten players under the age of 21 including two under the age of 13 - Dean Bavister and Jim Chambers.

The Easter Counties v Midland Counties Challenge match for the BQR trophy will take place at the Raunds Cue Sports, March 26th.

I thank Phil Welham for the invitation to present the trophy. Unfortunately I can't accept as the date clashes with the final of the English Amateur at Darley Dale. I am sure that Phil will give my best wishes to all the players and hope that all concerned have a great day. I must also thank Ross Porter and the Secretary of the Spalding and District for the invitation to present the prizes on the Spalding League's individual championships day. It is flattering to be asked but I'm afraid that I just can't make it, and again hope that all involved have a really good day.

Midland Counties

John Smith
Derby take the Lead

After losing their opening game Derby then had three good wins and now lead the table with 24 points from Nuneaton (19.) Kidderminster are in third place (17) just one point ahead of Nottingham. Rugby had a very good win over title-holders Stoke, the Rugby players making no less than eleven half-centuries between them. Kidderminster, after a good start, went down 6- 3 at Nottingham. Banbury seem unable to find any form and to date have managed only six points. No-one has yet threatened David Rees' highest break of 200. John Smith has a 169 to his credit, and Peter Shelley a 125. It will be surprising of there are not more centuries before the end of the season. Colin Routledge is leading the, "Most wins," table with 10 wins from 12 games. Alan Orton has 8 from 12, Jamie Moore 8 from 9, Trevor Scott, John Smith, and Peter Shelley all have 7 from 9.
