Billiards Challenge N.S.W. v Australasia

This challenge match was played at the Marconi Club on the evening after the final of the Australasian Masters won by George Gamin (BQR July 1994, P17).

The players were paired and played the best of 3 x 40 minutes. The Australasian team was too strong for the NSW men, Tod Hayward (appropriately) being the home team's only winner. The highest break was a 98 by Wayne Carey, something of an anti-climax after the spate of big breaks in the Masters tournament.

1994 Minor Billiards Championships

Central Coast Leagues Club

There was a very pleasing entry of 56 players for this event. Eight groups played on the round-robin basis with winner and runner-up going into the last sixteen knock-out stage. The highest break was a 107 by Jim Hull. There were no other centuries but many players made breaks over 50. This was a very successful event and bodes well for the future of the game in Australia.

Win for 14 year old

This event was won by 14-year-old Ian Barber who has now won the U/15, U/18, and the U/21. A pleasing increase in the number of entries is reported. One competitor in the first round, Danny Coulter, in taking the rest managed to drop it. By the time he had picked it up the bell had gone leaving the unfortunate Coulter the loser by two points. Though the highest break was only 35 it is reported that the play was of a reasonable standard.

Good Result for Girl Player

The event was won by Ian Barber who also had the highest break of 36.

Kellie Viret, the only girl competitor, was beaten in the quarter-finals by Barber, but went into the reserve competition (Plate) and did very well indeed to reach the final where she lost by only 12 points.

Kellie's sister Sara is the girls U/18 champion.

Robby Foldvari

On a recent visit to his homeland, Robby Foldvari, best known to this magazine as a billiards player (though he has been known to play a frame or two of snooker in his time!) entered the NSW Open Snooker Championship. Robby reached the final but lost to Warren King 5 - 3. In an early round, King, 2-1 behind at the time, made a 147. This is the first time a maximum has been made in an Australian competition. The only other maximum to be made in Australia was the very first one ever, that by Murt O'Donoghue in 1934.

BQR thanks Ray Ealderston of, "Small Chalk," for the above details.
