Murt died in New Zealand at the age of 93. He made many thousand breaks at billiards and was the first player to make a 147 at Snooker. More importantly he was a well-liked and generous man. If you get the chance then ask Robby Foldvari to tell you about O'Donoghue.
From the EASB Newsletter dated 28th Feb:- "We are pleased to announce that the basis of an agreement has been reached by both parties and anticipate the EABA affiliating to the EASB in the near future as the Billiards Committee (EABA.) All EASB billiards matters would be handled by the Billiards Committee (EABA) including tournaments and the development of billiards in England. However, for this season, the EASB will be completing its billiards tournaments separately. This decision is for the benefit of billiards and will lead to its future development. "Hip, Hip, Hooray!
BQR congratulates Mike Russell on regaining the UK Title, and Robby Foldvari on his win in the latest Grand Slam. Both events will be fully covered in the next issue. Four more players have turned professional -all Indians. Alok Kumar, Ashok Shandilya, Sonic Multani, and Bunny Dalmia.
I like to think that the photograph is of someone who has made a contribution to the game and not necessarily as player. I was very impressed with the way that referee Colin Pattimore handled the recent EABA championship in Nottingham. Refereeing important matches is not an easy job and Mr. Pattimore's unobtrusive handling of the games was of professional standard.
Standards in the Boys League improve all the time. Albert Hanson reports that the 16-year-old Chris Shutt recently scored 461 points in a half-hour game making breaks of 174 and 147. This is a league record score beating Mike Russell's 426 made at the age of 17. Russell still holds the break record of 307 made aged 17. I have seen Shutt play and can assure readers that he is not one for wasting time.
A letter appeared recently in, "The Australian," from a Mr. A. Tomlin of St. Kilda, Victoria. Mr Tomlin is trying to get the authorities to do something about the state of Walter Lindrum's grave which he says is, "forgotten, neglected, abused." He is trying to raise the matter with the Government Ministry which deals with the, "Commemoration of Historic Events and Famous Persons." I'm sure all readers will wish Mr. Tomlin the best of luck in his quest.
The final event of this season will be held at, "The Reardon," Stoke on Sunday, 15th May, with a get-together and dinner on the Saturday evening. The first event of next season will be an amateur tournament at Guildford on September, 11th. Although these are firm dates at the time of going to press, it would be as well to check before travelling.
The EASB billiards championship will go ahead this year as agreement with the EABA was reached at too late a date to cancel the EASB tournament. There are some thirty entrants and the semi-finals and final will be played at the Raunds Snooker Centre, Northampton on the 7th and 8th of May. BQR will give as much coverage as possible to this important event.
The Billiards Quarterly Review Golf Society Inaugural Meeting Wednesday, 7th September RAMSDALE PARK GOLF CENTRE OXTON ROAD CALVERTON NOTTINGHAM
There are two courses at Ramsdale Park. The, "Low Course," is a very good par three. The, "High Course," is a 6546 yards par 71.
A popular combination for golfing societies is to play 9 holes on the par three, lunch, and then a full 18 holes on the main course. The cost for this, including coffee and biscuits on arrival would be £20. If we were to play only one round - on the High Course - then the cost would be £16.
An extensive menu is on offer ranging from a very light lunch of soup and rolls, right through to a full three course meal. This would be extra.
More details will be sent to those readers who have already expressed interest. If you would like to join us then please con- tact me as soon as possible so that I can see what the preferences are, both for the programme and the timing, and then confirm the booking.
The venue has been chosen as being very central and convenient for the Ml, Al, and A46. If there were sufficient interest then we could have different venues next year possibly for a Spring and an Autumn meeting.
We would almost certainly play a Stableford. An official handicap is not necessary.
Come and have a game.
