CIU

Working Men's Club and Institute Union Limited Individual Billiards

from Peter Miller

The CIU Billiards championship is generally recognised as the second most important championship in the calendar after the English Amateur. Many of the country's best players participate each year. The holder, and champion for the last three years, is the 1990 and 1991 Amateur Champion Martin Goodwill

Neil Rewhorn (Hinckley Central) is a player to watch. I played him a year ago in the Midlands and, though winning, was given a hard time by this, then, rather inexperienced player. Over the last year Neil has improved his game almost out of recognition and is rapidly staking his claim as one of the country's leading amateurs. (Tom Terry)

Bristol and District Billiard League

From Vince Hardwell

The Bristol Billiards League was won by the Frys Club A Team. The Southwold Sports team. The Individual KO winner was Cliff Weeks of Southwold Sports with team-mate Tom Collins runner up. The highest break of the season was 119 by Michael White of the Frys Club. Handicaps have been applied in a similar way to that used in the Radstock League. A sliding scale adding five points after a win or deducting five after a loss. Matches are 100 up. The second division play 50 minute time matches. There are only two players to a team, one point for a win and one for the aggregate.

Thanks Vince. Glad to hear the game is alive down your end of the country.

Pateley Bridge and The Teesside Boys

From John Richmond

On Saturday 23rd October, 1993, we entertained the Teesside League here at Pateley Bridge and after a gigantic tea they gave a delightful exhibition of billiards. There were about 24 people from Teesside, players, parents, together with Chairman Ralph Maklin, Secretary Albert Hanson, and Treasurer Tom Murphy. Other guests included CIU Champion Martin Goodwill, and Walter Brown, Chairman of the Harrogate District League. The billiard room was filled with spectators and the results of the games as follows (40 minutes) Chris Shutt 220(58) - Paul Bennett 182 Chris Brunskill 228 - Anthony Parsons 115 Chris Shutt 282(57.53) - Chris Brunskill 148 There was also a 30 minute game between 9-year-old Robin Wilson and 13-year-old Previn Shukle, Wilson winning 135 - 50. As the result of an accident, Previn Shukle had an arm in plaster but with just enough fingers showing to form a bridge. The referee was Ray Gowton from Harrogate.

After the matches, Martin Goodwill gave some of the boys a few tips on the finer points of the game.

Pateley Bridge, though high in the Yorkshire Dales, does not have a very high standard of billiards although we love the game. We will be delighted to provide a venue and extend a cordial invitation to billiard players who would like to play an exhibition or a tournament. Our next event will be a repeat of last year's round-robin between Steve Crosland, Martin Goodwill, Brian Hoole, and Derick Townend.

Thanks John. Always good to hear of local pockets of enthusiasm. Pity there are not more of them.
