B.Q.R, wishes all readers a Happy New Year, good health, prosperity, and bigger breaks. Thanks to all those who have considered the magazine of sufficient merit as to have renewed their subscriptions. We shall, in 1993 as we did in 1992, attempt to cover all billiards events of major importance, and as far as possible, also those that are perhaps of less importance. Remember that the magazine is intended as forum for anyone who has an opinion he would like to share or air.
Regular readers may notice some differences in the appearance of the magazine. I hope the differences are for the better. They come about because I am using a new computer program. For the technically minded, BQR is now produced using Quark Xpress running on a Macintosh LC11. The drawings are produced in a program called, "Intellidraw." Please don't be too critical. Anybody who has tried to draw on a computer screen will know what a difficult task this can be.
It was reported in the last Issue (P.12) that Roxton Chapman was a victim of the new baulk-line rule in his deciding game with Geet Sethi in the Radiant Prelims held in Sheffield in September. One of the spectators has pointed out that, in his opinion, Roxton did not play a foul stroke. The Peterborough professional's failed attempt to cross the line from a pot-red took the number of points scored since his previous crossing to exactly 100. He did not therefore exceed the limit and could have continued with a safety shot. I did not see the incident and can only comment that refereeing is not an easy job. Readers' views on this point will be welcomed. It must be added that Chapman himself made no protest whatever.
The death is reported of the Indian Player Satish Mohan. Mohan was only 53. He was a highly talented player who had all the necessary ability to win a world title but never quite made it. Satish is said to have had a drink problem. If this is true then he was not the first billiard player to have had such a problem and it is sure that he won't be the last. He who is without sin, let him throw the first stone.
These two talented young players recently played a 4 hour challenge match at the Filey Snooker Centre which Chapman won by a mere 28 points - 1177 to 1149. Both players made a double century. Ross Porter has sent a detailed report of the match which will be included in the next issue (space permitting) There were a good number of spectators including Mike Russell and Peter Gilchrist and it is expected that the two youngsters will play again.
