Ten teams participated. Teams comprise four players playing games of 200 up off handicaps. Four points for a win. 2 points for scoring 190 or more, 1 point for 180 - 189. The League was won by Bradford Abbas with 219 points and the same team that in the 1990/91 season finished bottom. This is a remarkable achievement and so congratulations to Messrs J. Gillham, M. Gillham, B. Harvey, and P. Willis. Runners up were Stoke 'B' with 204 points. In third place were Bradford Plains with 194. The Bradford Plains team could possibly lay claim to some kind of record as it is made up of players from one family. Gordon Warren and his three sons Steve, Gary, and Mark. Steve Warren made his first league century break (100). Brian Harvey recorded 10 centuries in 23 matches with a best of 152.

Close! Harvey looked to be well in command until Watts with 97 and 60 in consecutive visits took the lead only to see Harvey scrape home at his very next visit.
Brian Harvey had a comfortable win over Jack Masters by 750 to 318. Harvey had breaks of 78,74 and 64.
BQR congratulates Harvey on his win.
The League was won by the Bridgwater Regency Club (B. Harvey, R. Hill, E. Gill.) The Bridgwater 147 Club finished second (R. Moore, D. Moore, F. Martin, R. Lee.) BQR congratulates Dick Watts on winning both the Taunton League Championship and the League Handicap Championship.
Brian Harvey recorded 7 centuries with a highest of 267 unfinished beating the previous league record.
Brian Harvey (right) with Bob Close at the December 1991 Widnes Mini-Prix Brian Harvey makes a lot of good breaks clown in the South-West and has a very good record in both Mini-Prix and ABC tournaments. It is a bit of a mystery as to why he doesn't achieve more success in the Amateur Championship. Will 1993 will see him at Cubbington?
At the end of August Exeter were in the lead with 5 wins from 6 matches. St James and Wyvern were sharing second place with 4 wins from 5. There were some uncompleted fixtures. Bill Andress was the leading games winner with 16. Eight players had recorded century breaks. The highest was 214 by Martin Goodwill who played only two games. Others were by Bill Andress (126.) John Scott (St James) (115.) Terry Colby (119,) John Barnett (108.) John Smith (118,) Painter (133.) and Scott (Wyvern) (110.) The Christian Names of Mr. Painter and Mr. Scott are not given but they must both be pretty good players.
The Championship was won by Peter Shelley but BQR has no details of the Final. It was a good tournament with a format which gave every entrant at least three hours billiards for a moderate entry fee (Unless of course, like the Editor of this magazine, a player managed to turn up late!) The following players made century breaks during various stages of the competition. Malcolm Lax (134), John Smith (103), Ken Shirley (167), Peter Shelley (166).
A spin-off from the Midlands was that Peter Shelley challenged Amateur Champion David Causier to a money match on Causier's home ground in the North-East. There were those who thought that Peter may have been a little hasty and would have had much more chance if he could have brought the Amateur Champion to Stoke for such a match - but Peter has never been short on confidence. In the event Causier ran out an easy winner though Shelley had a break of 182.

The Guildford Open is an interesting and welcome addition to the calendar. The first Guildford Open was a qualified success but will surely attract more players as it becomes better known. Organiser George White writes, "I was disappointed in the number of entries for the Guildford Amateur Championship. This was no doubt due in part to the date and the short notice. I had trouble finding a date that did not clash with another event. Perhaps next year the Billiard players could give me a date that will accommodate more - but it was an enjoyable days billiards."
