Amateur Billiards Circuit 1992-1993

Atack Snooker Centre, Derngate, Northants

1st Event: October 11th, 1992

Goodwill resumes Business

The season's first ABC event was held at the Atack Snooker Centre and attracted 51 entrants. This is a record turnout to date and bears out the BQR prediction that these Amateur events would grow in popularity. The players were welcomed by a friendly and efficient staff in the excellently appointed club so conveniently situated a few miles from exit 16 of the Ml. Playing conditions - as always - varied.

Richmond Trophy Goodwill first winner Billiards enthusiast John Richmond presented the ABC with a trophy for the best player of the season based on the ABC ranking order. The first winner was ex Amateur Champion Martin Goodwill who in the ABC inaugural series obtained a total of 18 points from 7 events. This just beat Peter Shelley into second place (16 from 7.) (See BQR July. P17 for complete ranking list.)

Second Round
Goodwill starts to find form

Since starting his new job in the RAF Martin Goodwill has had no time for practice to the extent that his chalk had gone mouldy and his ferrule tarnished. But his game started to shine a little brighter. First round century-maker Watts succumbed to Peter Shelley. There were excellent victories for Albert Salisbury and Andy Reeve over David Burgess and Bill Andress.

Third Round
Good win for Moore

Jamie Moore, a promising young player from Nottingham, had a nice 87 break in an excellent win over the experienced Luton player John Scott. All the fancied players came through without too much trouble except for Brian Harvey who gained a very narrow victory in a tough match with veteran Chris Ross by a mere 9 points.

Quarter Finals
Two centuries for Goodwill

Goodwill - Shelley matches are usually exciting games to watch. This one was an exception as Goodwill piled on the agony with two centuries to win comfortably. Albert Salisbury was much too experienced for Moore. Neil Rewhorn had had a good tournament to this point but was just out-gunned by Steve Crosland.

Semi Finals

A very bad neck/spinal injury some years ago left Albert "Snowy" Salisbury with some muscular problems which might have been expected seriously to curtail his billiard playing. Not a bit of it. In his forays into the world of the Pro-Am and the ABC Albert invariably performs well and today was no exception as he put out Steve Crosland who himself had been playing well enough. Goodwill's 94 was the deciding factor in his match with Brian Harvey.

Final
Goodwill too good

In winning this event Martin Goodwill carried on where he left off last season. Causier was absent today but would have had to perform exceptionally well to put out the RAF man. Salisbury had done so well to reach the final but was outclassed on this occasion. Last years domination by Goodwill, Shelley, Harvey, Crosland and Causier looks set to continue but there are one or two young players who may begin to make their mark notably Neil Rewhorn and Jamie Moore.

Arthur Reeve wins a close game

Only eight points in it in an entertaining ding-dong struggle. Arthur Reeve is a wonderful example to the older player. Well done sir. (You do have the right of reply Arthur!)
