The Billiards Quarterly Review : July 1992

Herbert Beetham

Died 22nd April, 1992, aged 82 years;

All readers will know of the death of Herbert Beetham. The last issue of the Billiards Quarterly Review carried an article, " Conversation with Herbert Beetham. "his article was not intended as an obituary though the billiards world was well aware that Herbert was very ill. He read that article and gave it his approval. Herbert was Champion in 1960,1961, and 1963. He was World Champion in 1960. The last member of the great triumvirate -Beetham, Driffield, and Edwards - is now no longer with us. His funeral was attended by a great crowd of his old friends from many walks of life. Representing the billiards world were Peter Derby, Des Heald, Ken Hobbs, Malcolm Lax, David Rees, Ken Shirley, Tom Terry, Derick Townend, and Mark Wildman. Herbert Beetham achieved great things in the world of billiards - he became a champion. He achieved even greater things in the wider world - he became a much loved man.

No gathering of billiards enthusiasts was complete without Herbert Beetham's kindly presence. Something in all of us has died with him.
