At the Stoke ABC tournament an impromptu meeting of all the contestants unanimously agreed that Albert Hanson, Derick Townend, Tom Terry, and Malcolm Lax should form an Ad Hoc steering committee to liaise with the WPBSA on the future of the amateur game - billiards only. The following is the text of a letter sent to the WPBSA Chief Executive, Mr. David Harrison, by Albert Hanson on behalf of the steering committee.
"Dear Sir, At a meeting of billiards enthusiasts and activists at Stoke on 14th June, 1992, a steering group of myself, Derick Townend, Tom Terry, and Malcolm Lax, was unanimously elected.
Co-option to the steering group is at our discretion.
The purpose of the steering group is to further the objectives outlined in my unacknowledged letter to you of 21st April, 1992, (Copy enclosed.) We re-iterate our request that we be involved in dialogue with yourselves in order that we may collectively provide an organisational structure to represent and organise the amateur billiards game.
We therefore look forward to a meeting at your convenience in the near future.
Yours faithfully Albert Hanson."
A good number of amateurs have said that they would be willing to serve on a body to organise and promote the amateur game. It has to be made clear that the steering group has no interest in turning itself into a self-perpetuating unelected body. All players, all those interested in the game, may rest assured that this is no embryonic B&SCC. There will eventually have to be some kind of democratic election of members of any new ruling body. The steering group has been set up with the one purpose of getting things moving - and moving in the right direction. The Billiards Quarterly Review will keep all readers informed of progress and our correspondence section is open to anyone for any comment.
