Defending champion Martin Goodwill was in terrific form as he retained his billiards title beating Middlesbrough's Nick Hayward in a three hour match played at the Marske Working Mens Club on the 18th April. In his Semi-final and Final matches Martin scored a total of 2622 points at 437 per hour with 8 centuries. His 167 was the highest of the tournament but the record still stands at 398 unfinished by Bob Close in 1985.
Only 59 in it after 3 hours play between these two ex Teesside Boys League players. Both players have, in the past, had success in the Mini-Prix Pro-Am tournaments.

Phil Welham had done very well to get this far but was overwhelmed by an in-form Goodwill who made break after break.

Nick Hayward learned the game with the Teesside boys and has only recently resumed playing after a year or two's absence from the game. He is a player of potential but was never in the match as Martin Goodwill, also ex Teesside Boys, scored at a prodigious rate totalling 883 in the second session (One-and-a-half hours)

Thanks Mr Miller. BQR congratulates Martin Goodwill on his retaining the prestigious C.I.U. title - second only to the English amateur.
