The inaugural season of the Eastern Counties League was a great success. The organisers are hoping that there will be more teams entered next season including teams from the Boston, Spalding, and Bury St. Edmunds areas. The league was decided on the basis of one point for each game won.

The Individual Championship, held at the Maltings Q Club, Kings Lynn, was won by Albert "Snowy" Salisbury who defeated Roxton Chapman in the Final by 317 to 165. During the previous rounds Chapman had made breaks of 93, 138, and 142. The Plate championship was won by Phil Welham who beat Ivan Chambers of Ely by 136 to 110. Thanks Phil. What a great first season.
The League was won by Exeter with 5 wins from seven matches. St.James, Henley, and Wyvern also had 5 wins each but Exeter took the title by virtue of a better points average. Woking and Banbury had 3 wins, Phoenix 'B' 1, and Phoenix A* 0.
The highest break of the season came from Terry Colby with a 161 and he also had a 104. Other century makers were Dick Watts with 141, and 101, and Bill Andress with 120, 114, and 101. There were dozens of breaks between 50 and 100. This is a strong league with a very high amateur standard. Matches involve some considerable travelling and the enthusiasm of the players is beyond question.
Thanks Jerry Conba. A match between a team representing the Southern Counties and one representing the Eastern Counties would be interesting. The winners could claim to be League Champions of England!
This is a competition held for the individual champions of all the leagues affiliated to the Merseyside Association.

The Midlands Championship will be played on a round-robin basis. There will be eight groups of four players. These groups will play one-and-a-half hour games (round robin) and the winner of each group will be a quarter-finalist. The final stages will be played at Cubbington. This means that each entrant will get a good day's billiards having at least three matches.
Thanks Steve Martin and Malcolm Lax. Sounds like a good idea and sounds like a good entry.
