Southern Counties Billiards League

High Scoring
From Jerry Conba

With the league programme three-quarters completed Wyvern led the table and looked clear favourites for the Championship.

Outstanding performances included the highest break of 161 from Terry Colby who has also had a 104. Dick Watts had two centuries in the same match, 141 and 101, Bill Andress has had a 114 and Ron Sunderland a 104. The highest three-match aggregates (3 hours) are 909 by Andress and 906 by Watts. There was some remarkable scoring in the Essex - Phoenix 'B' match.

Although Essex won 9-0 the Phoenix players contributed towards a record aggregate score of 4133 in a match which produced three centuries and twelve breaks over fifty.

There are no keener players anywhere. Thanks Jerry Conba, let us know how it all finishes up.

Eastern Counties Billiards League

Big Break from Albert Salisbury
From Phil Welham

The newly formed Eastern Counties League got away to a good start and the latest reports show the Huntingdon 'A' team (Dennis McGuigan, Albert Salisbury, Tony Henke) leading from Norwich (Colin Extall, Gerry Hoffman, Fos Wilson.) Matches are of 90 minutes duration and there has been some very good performances. The most outstanding individual effort to date is that of Albert "Snowy"Salisbury with a break of 249 described as being largely at the top-of-the-table. Other century makers are Fos Wilson (113 and the first to be made in the league,) and Roxton Chapman (121.) High Individual totals include Roxton with 651, 'Snowy,' 504, Phil Welham 545, whilst John Carman, Dick Bidewell, Andy Reeve, and Dennis McGuigan have all had totals over 400.

Thanks for the information Phil, please keep us informed so that BQR can carry a complete round-up of the league season.

Teesside

First Girl Player
From Albert Hanson

The Teesside Boys Billiards League is now the Teesside boys plus one girl. Thirteen year old Penny West applied to join the League some time ago as a member of the Elm Tree Club team. But at the League A.G.M. it wasn't all plain sailing, Albert writes:-"Well it happened but only just. A three-quarter majority was required and the voting was 8 in favour from 12 possible on the motion that females be allowed to compete in all league promotions. This is subject to the right of any member club to refuse entry to their facilities. It means that Penny (and possibly others) may compete at home but must seek permission to enter away clubs - and some will refuse. Never mind, it's the breakthrough that I sought."

Thanks Albert. BQR has since been informed that Penny has played her first match which she won - by one!

Brian Harvey

Brian's success in the Huntingdon Mini-Prix and more recently in the Morley Amateur prompted me to ask him for some career details:- "during the season I made 10 three-figure breaks in league matches and to date in 1991 I have made a total of 139 century breaks with eleven of 200+ and three of 300+ with a top of 325. In all I have made six breaks over 300 with the highest being 335. I'm aiming for a 400 before the year is out.

Looking forward to the next Billiard Quarterly as everything stops when it drops through the post box. Keep up the good work, see you soon, Brian. "hanks Brian for the information and the compliment. I hope you make that quadruple century before Christmas.

Yorkshire

From Geoffrey Oldfield

The Yorkshire Championship was won for the second time by Huddersfield player Stuart Hill a member of Honley Liberal. Stuart beat Rodney Simms of Leeds 600 - 418 in the Semi, and Bill Mount of Queensbury's, Huddersfield 600 - 420 in the final. The Yorkshire billiards handicap was won by Derek Townend who beat Ted Warren of Huddersfield.

Thanks Geoffrey and congratulations to the winners - Yorkshire is a big place!
