Tyne Tees Television will be screening their Public Service Announcements during May on behalf of the Teesside Boys' Billiards league. (Writes Albert Hanson) The League is hoping to attract more coaches to come forward in order to strengthen the number of clubs involved. Currently 18 Clubs compete in two divisions and more coaches would add to that figure. Coaches do not need formal qualifications. A basic awareness of the game and an abundance of patience are all (sic) that is required. At the A.G.M to be held in July, the League will debate a request for a female to be allowed to compete. Elm Tree Social are providing tuition for 12-year-old Penny West with a view to her competing in the league next season. Anyone interested in coaching or competing should contact Albert Hanson.Tel.456418
The Annual Teesside Open Championship was held on the day before the Middlesbrough Mini-Prix. Players who were staying overnight thus had the opportunity of entering this prestigious tournament and one of them, Bill Andress, took the Title. This year's Teesside Champion therefore comes from Devon. This fact is not particularly appreciated by the locals, who, whilst having nothing against the million-miles-a-year Bill, reckon it a poor show that no-one from the area was able to see off this foreign challenge. Hanging Judge Jeffreys did a better job on these south-western upstarts when he was running the tournaments back in 1685.
There were a good entry with the Teesside Boys well represented.
G. Cromack beat P. Reeve. A. Nolan beat S. Hawkins. W. Andress beat G. Britton. K. Cockerill beat J. Lindley.
Nolan beat Cromack. Andress beat Cockerill
Bill Andress beat Alf Nolan.
Well done Bill. I have not seen Alf Nolan play recently but I have no doubt he is still a very hard man to beat. Bill made breaks of 61 and 46 in the Final.
Paul Reeve and Andress made centuries and Alf Nolan had an 88 in his first game.(Ed.)
