ENTRIES for the Liverpool Charity Handicap, in aid of local hospitals, closed last month at 86. Last year there were between 40 and 50 entries. Although primarily a charity effort the handicap is also an interesting billiards competition in which many of Liverpool's best amateurs take part. It was found necessary this year to leave the arrangement of dates for matches in the first round to the home players.
The neutral table idea also had to be abandoned on account of the size of the entry. But a 15 per cent.
adjustment was made against the home player, as compared with 10 per cent. last year, which was found to be inadequate.
Another annual charity effort is once again in full swing. The Cuefellows, with the co-operation of friendly billiards players in all parts of Merseyside, have operated for nine years. During that period they have played 106 matches and contributed over £2,471 to the Liverpool Goodfellow Fund, the proceeds of which are distributed among necessitous families at Christmas time.
This popular and skilful band of billiard players visit any suitable places where they would be welcomed.
They are having a busy time.
Twenty-one entries have been received for the Liverpool Billiards' Association Cup. The entries include the strongest sides playing in local billiards.
It is interesting to note that Charles Haselden, of Earlestown, the Liverpool and district junior champion, recently made a record personal break of 121 in eight minutes.
