P.C. Hughes, of the F. Division, was the winner, by 750 to 700, against P.C. Leckenby, of the E Division, of the Metropolitan Police Billiards Championship, which was played at Burroughes Hall, Soho Square, on the last Monday in May, and is reported in The Police Review.
The winner received (at the hands of Chief Constable Olive) the championship gold medal and cut glass dishes and stand. P.C. Leckenby was presented with the championship gold and silver medal and plated fruit dish. The third prize, a case of fish servers, went to P.C. Adams (of the F Division), and the fourth, a cue and case presented by Mr. Tom Reece, to P.C. Layfield (of the V Division). The prizes in the Divisional Team Competition and the Divisional Surgeon's Cup, which were played for a short time ago, were also presented in the course of the evening by Chief Constable Olive.
The team competition for Col. Laurie's Cup was won by the F Division (Supt. Short, P.S. Pope, and P.C.s Sprules, Adams, and Hughes), the runners-up being the E Division, who were the holders of the cup last year. The E Division team were P.C.s Woodhouse, Mugridge, Clarke, Leckenby, and Godley.
The H Division were third, and the V Division fourth in the team competition.
Handsome prizes were awarded to the individual players in each of these four teams. The Divisional Surgeon's Cup went to P.S. Pullen (of the H Division), who also received a cut-glass fruit dish.
The second prize in this competition was won by P.C. Bater (of the H Division), the third by P.C. Pepper, and the fourth by P.C. Adams (of the F Division).
