Some Notes on Affiliated Billiard Associations

By A. STANLEY THORN (Secretary of the Billiards Association and Control Council)

The two latest Associations to become affiliated should be mentioned in view of the great importance of their efforts for the betterment of the game in South Africa. These are the South African Billiards Association Control Club, of Johannesburg, and the Western Provinces B.C.C. of South Africa. The former is the parent governing body of the game for the whole of South Africa, Associations or Control Clubs representing Western Provinces, Eastern Provinces, Griqualand West and Cape Town being affiliated to it.

The first annual general meeting of the South African B.A.C.C. was held at the Union Club, Johannesburg, on November i last, Mr. Arthur Walker, the first president, being in the chair.

In the course of his address, Mr. Walker very warmly advocated the idea of attempting to promote an Empire Amateur Championship, and was very sanguine that the numerous difficulties in the achievement of this magnificent project could be overcome by the united determination of the governing bodies of the game in all parts of the Empire.

Whilst agreeing that the promotion of an Empire Championship is in every respect desirable, the Billiards Association and Control Council incline to the opinion that the obstacles in the way of its attainment are at present insuperable, so that, at the moment, I can only advise the more ardent supporters of the scheme to wait and see whether some practical solution of these difficulties cannot in the fulness of time be devised.
