RULES FOR BLACK POOL

1. That it shall be a perpetual pool, and a player or players may come in at any time, after giving one clear round's notice, taking the balls in the order they are coloured on the pool board.

2. That the cost of the table be defrayed by the players, who shall pay by the hour for its use.

3. That when the game has been continued half an hour, a redistribution of balls may be demanded by any player, but an entire round must be played before it takes place, commencing with the red on white, and terminating with the white on red; the last player, however, should he pocket a ball, may conclude his break before ceasing to play.

4. That all regulations, as regards the distribution of balls, or foul strokes of whatever nature, &c, as in ordinary pool, be accepted for black pool, with the following exceptions and additions:-

5. That the black ball be placed on the centre spot at the opening of the game, after which it must not be touched or taken up under any circumstance (not even if it masks another ball), except when pocketed, in which case it must be replaced on the centre spot, or, if that be occupied, on the pyramid spot, or, if that also be occupied, on the billiard spot.

6. When a life is taken off any coloured ball, the striker must follow on the black, and if he pockets it, he must follow on the nearest ball; if he pocket that also, he follows on the next nearest, even though it be the black, and so on, but he must not be allowed to play on the black twice, without scoring a coloured ball between.

7. For an ordinary hazard, by holing any of the coloured balls, the striker receives a single stake from the owner of the ball pocketed, but for holing the black he receives from each player in the pool.

8. If the striker in playing on the black, misses it; or if he pockets the black and his own ball with the same stroke, he forfeits all round.

9. If, in playing at the black, the striker holes another ball, he cannot claim a life, unless he has by the same stroke pocketed the black; and the owner of the ball holed must in turn play from the D.

10. Forcing the player's or any ball off the table subjects the player to a forfeit to the owner of the ball knocked off; but forcing the black off, or the player's ball off, having struck the black first, subjects the player to a forfeit all round.

11. If after hitting the ball aimed at, a cannon is made on the black, and the striker's ball runs into a pocket, the striker only pays a single stake to the owner of the ball first hit.

12. In the event of a miss, the striker's ball must not be stopped, and if it eventually strikes the black, whether it has touched another ball or not, the player forfeits all round.

13. If after pocketing a coloured ball the black is also holed, the striker cannot claim more than a single life; but the black must be replaced on the centre spot, and the striker may play at it.

14. An entire round must be played after a player has given notice of his intention of retiring before he is at liberty to do so.
