Jottings of the Month
- The second part of "Billiards for Everybody," by Charles
Roberts, has just been published.
- George Clarke and T. Carpenter will play 2,400 up level
at Cardiff on December 26 and 27.
- Playing against Smith at Derby, Breed improved upon his
record break of 315 by scoring 326.
- Playing Mr. F. Hutton, the Kentish amateur champion,
at Margate, Mr. E. Cadman thrice exceeded the 100 and
won by 1,500 to 844.
- The first round of the Press Billiard Handicap, which
commences at Leicester Square on December 8, will last
until January 11.
- Stevenson and Inman are matched to meet in a level
game of 17,000 for £100 aside at the Holborn Hall during
the fortnight commencing March 30.
- Reece and Harverson (rec. 1,000) will meet in a match
of 17,000 up for £100 aside at Leicester Square, in the two
weeks commencing December 15.
- Although Gray has not exceeded the thousand yet this
season he has been hovering about it with 963, 860 and 820
against Reece, and 980 against Harverson.
- Reece appeared to suffer from his recent bonzoline play
when meeting Stevenson at Burroughes Hall, but made a
splendid rally in the course of the week although finally
losing.
- Mr. L. Horner was playing Mr. A. Vahid 100 up at the
Kensington Park Hotel on November 15, and Mr. Vahid
was owing 50. The latter gentleman got no farther, however,
for Mr. Horner ran out after the opening single baulk.
- In the Welsh professional Billiard Handicap at Cardiff the
handicap is as follows:Tom Carpenter (Welsh champion)
scr., E. T. Millwood rec. 90, A. E. Hammond 100, G. Tuxworth
120, J. Coverley 140, F. Parfitt 110, F. Clifford 170,
A. Thyer 180, C. Benson 200, P. Harding 250.
- Inman will play Hoppe, the American champion, two
matches of 6,000 up and one of 12,000. Half of each game
is to be played under American 18.2 baulk-line laws, and
the other half under English rules, but the pocket openings
will be 3 7/8 in., and the balls 2¼ in. Each match is for £200
aside and the winner takes 65 per cent. of the gate receipts.
- Inman has had a peculiar experience in his first two
matches subsequently to his return from Canada, both Peall
and Newman having defeated him, the one off the "rec. 4,000
in 9,000" mark, and the other off the "rec. 4,000 in 18,000."
- As to Newman, at any rate, there is no doubt that Inman is
destined to meet this fine young player many times in the
future, and when the points conceded by him will be considerably
fewer in number.
- Playing E. C. Breed at Derby on Wednesday, W. Smith
scored 516 off the red balla world's record with ivories.
- Amongst other good breaks of the month have been 590
by Stevenson against Reece, and 436 by Reece against Gray.
- John Duncan, champion of Ireland, will play James Brady
(rec. 3,000) 14,000 up for £25 aside, commencing December
5.
- In the Leeds £100 Billiard Handicap, Mr. H. Virr (rec.
200) was beaten by young Harry Taylor (rec. 100) by 1,500
Stevenson, conceding 1,250 in 9,000 for £50 aside, will
meet Harverson at Leicester Square during the week commencing
December 29.
- Mr. H. F. Valentine has won the amateur championship
of New Zealand for the second time, his opponent on this
occasion being Mr. F. Farrell.
- Play in the Leeds Amateur Championship has commenced.
- Mr. A. Smith, the present holder, Mr. J. W. Vine, and
Mr. H. Dawson, have each won the championship upon two
occasions, and either of these may finally win it this year.
- Inman seemed to be overhauling Newman hand over hand
on November 27, when he scored no fewer than 2,369 in the
two sessions, and reduced his deficit from 2,556 to 1,327.
- J. Mack, the well-known Manchester professional, sails
for Australia early in the New Year, having accepted an
appointment there with a firm of billiard table makers.
- Fraser Farrar, of Wandsworth, and J. J. Ashley, of Camberwell,
each 19, will play 2,000 up for the boy championship
of London on the evenings of December 9 to 12, at Messrs.
Orme's, Soho Square.
- The final of the Sheffield Amateur Billiard Championship
resulted in a win for the holder, E. Leadbeater, who has
held the honour four times in the past five years. His challenger,
who had survived the heats and semi-final, was W.
Rayden.
- Entries for "The Morning Advertiser" Licensed Victuallers'
Handicap closed on November 29. The competition,
which applies to 90 miles round London, is for a £50
challenge cup and sixteen gold medals, and all receipts will
go to trade charities.
- During an open week at the beginning of last month
Stevenson played five matches with City amateurs at Simpson's
Restaurant, with breaks as follow:159, 217 v.
Harwitz, 50; 176, 184 v. H. Morris, 22, 34; 365, 88, 72 v.
W. S. Jones, 28, 31; 108, 120, 165 v. L. Stroud, 42, 48, 36,
32; and 107, 194, 92 v. J. Harrison and H. Belcher (two
strokes to Stevenson's one), 21. Stevenson won all the
matches.
- Playing in the London Section of the B.A. Amateur Championship
last year, Mr. W. R. Wall, of Claygate, Surrey,
scored 1,000 to 199 v. A. S. Gurney; 1,000 to 920 v. L.
Stroud; and was defeated by 1,000 to 970 by S. H. Fry.
Mr. Wall has now decided to try his fortune as a professional
and has taken over the management of the Swan and Sugar
Loaf Hotel at Croydon.
- Young Harry Taylor, of Leeds, who did only poorly in
last year's Preliminary Tournament at Burroughes Hall,
is now playing much better billiards, and towards the end
of the month met George Gray in Sunderland. He received
1,500 in 4,500.
- A billiard handicap amongst Newcastle journalists ended
in Mr. A. E. Johnstone ("Newcastle Chronicle") defeating
Mr. R. H. Craig ("Newcastle Journal").
- Much interest has been caused by the recent contest between
the in-man and the new-man in billiards. Inman has
long been amongst the "ins," and it now looks as though
Newman cannot be kept amongst the "outs."
