Amateur Doings of the Month

London

Mr. H. A. O. Lonsdale (receiving 400) played four exhibition games of 1,000 up against Stevenson at the Soho Square Salon and won the last of the four by 1,000 to 766.

His other scores were 897, 509, and 671. The Putney Home for Incurables benefited by these games, for participation in which, however, Mr. Lonsdale has been farcically suspended by the Billiard Association after having previously resigned his membership of that body.

The Inter-Hospital Championship, which carries with it a handsome cup and some gold medals, has this year been won by St. Bartholomew's.

At the Billiards Control Club on March 29 the final heat of 1,000 up in the Stock Exchange Championship between Colin Smith and Walter Goolden resulted as follows:— Smith, 1,000; Goolden, 781. Smith made a break of 73 and Goolden of 72.

Liverpool

A most successful first season is chronicled by the Liverpool and District Amateur Billiard Association, and £100 will be equally divided amongst deserving local institutions.

There have been two important competitions successfully carried through—the Amateur Championship of Liverpool and District, and the Charity Handicap. In the former competition, Mr. T. Owens, of Birkenhead, won The Evening Express challenge cup and other prizes. The runner-up was Mr. I. Roberts, of Liverpool, to whom was awarded a gold medal. Mr. Owens made a break of 125.

In the Charity Handicap, Mr. W. J. Bagnall, Liscard, was the winner, and secured the challenge cup presented by Messrs. Orme and Sons, together with a beautiful gold diamond ring. Mr. G. Price, Liscard, as the second, won a silver cigarette casket. The third and fourth prizes fell to Mr. F. Geary, Liverpool, and Mr. W. Foster, Birkenhead.

The best break prize was won by Mr. Bagnall (147).

Hull

The local amateur championship has been won by F.

Grant for the second successive season. He also carries off the silver rose bowl.

Scarborough

F. A. Smith beat Ledgard for the Scarborough Championship and 20 guinea cup by 500 to 306. Smith's best breaks were 32, 51, 46. 28, and 33; Ledgard's, 32, 40, and 29. The second and third prizes and gold medals were won by Ledgard and W. Hornby.

Oxford

The annual contest between Oxford and Cambridge was concluded on March 15. R. V. Bardsley (Merton College, Oxford) and R. C. Lloyd (Trinity College, Cambridge), the two third strings, met in the afternoon at Eyles's Rooms, Oxford. A most interesting and exciting game resulted, the issue being in doubt right up to the finish.

Final scores:—R. V. Bardsley, 500; R. C. Lloyd, 478.

The second strings, R. C. Freeman (University College, Oxford) and E. C. Barnard (Downing College, Cambridge), tried conclusions at night, the issue of the contest depending on the result. Final scores:—E. C. Barnard, 500; R. C. Freeman, 397. Cambridge thus won by 2 games to 1, D. W. Ellis (Clare College, Cambridge) having previously beaten A. D. Womersley (University College, Oxford) by 255 points.
