Amateur Doings of the Month

The return half of the annual match between teams of three a side, representing the Counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire, was played on the 4th inst. at the Central Cafe, Leeds. The games were 500 up, ivory balls. The results of the first half of the match, played at Manchester on Dec. 19, were as follow:—Heginbottom (Lancashire) 500, E. C. Gray (Yorkshire) 339; G. Smith (Yorkshire) 500, E. J. Bagnall (Lancashire) 248; H. C. Virr (Yorkshire) 500, H. A. O. Lonsdale (Lancashire) 246; the aggregate lots being—Yorkshire 1,339, Lancashire 994. Results:— Williams 500, Heginbottom 412; Lonsdale 500, Virr 265; Smith 500, Wolstenholme 392. Yorkshire won by 306 points.

Woolwich

In the local Charity Handicap, the finalist was Mr. W. P. Jackson (rec. 120), who beat Mr. G. Richards (rec. 420) by 39 points in just under two hours. His best breaks were 49 and 40.

Herefordshire

The Herefordshire amateur billiard championship has been won by F. Fisher (500) against S. Myer (438).

Fisher's highest break was 37 and that of Myer 31.

Forfar

Mr. L. K. Cuthbert has won the championship of the Forfar Public Billiard Rooms, and also the first Unionist Club tournament. In this second tourney of the latter Club Mr. Wm. N. Prophet won from Mr. W. E. McBeth.

Edinburgh

The annual home-and-home inter-university matches between Edinburgh and Glasgow Unions resulted in a win for Edinburgh by 5 games to 1. The game played in Glasgow was also won by Edinburgh by 4 to 2—in all, 9 to 3.

Glasgow

The return match between amateurs, representing Glasgow and Edinburgh took place on Feb. 10 in the Palace Rooms, Glasgow, and was won by Edinburgh by nine to two. Scores:—Glasgow,—Buchanan 242, Anderson 300, Cambus 198, Houston 294, Proud 198, Moffat 237, Watson 262, Duncan 290, Robertson 250, Gray 251, Goodwin 300. Edinburgh.—Major Fleming 300, Croneen 236, Gill 300, McGregor 300, Millar 300, Bain 300, Palk 300, Clegg 300, Lawson 300, Treymain 300, Paterson 245.

Manchester

The sum available for distribution between the Charter Street Mission, the Police Aided Association for Clothing Destitute Children, and the Cinderella Fund, as the result of the recent Manchester Charity Handicap, is no less than £157 4s. This is the highest amount realized since the event was started seven years ago.

Liverpool

At Orme's Rooms, Liverpool, the final heat of the Charity Handicap was played on Feb. 3. The players were E. J. Bagnall (scratch), Lancashire County, and G. Price (rec. 300), Liscard. Highest breaks: Bagnall 68, Price 41. Result: Bagnall, 1,000; Price (rec. 300), 692. Bagnall also takes the premier break prize with a compilation of 147.

As a result of the handicap over £100 will be available.

Cornwall

Robert Thomas and T. Bailey, both of Penzance, met in the final for the 60-guinea challenge cup offered by Messrs. Wright and Co. for competition amongst Cornish amateurs.

Thomas soon gained a good lead with breaks of 65 and 57, and at the interval led by 180 points. In the evening he put on breaks of 65 and 45, and won by 344 points.
