Thornaby

1st March 1998

The Thornaby event saw the best entry to date of 33 juniors aged under 19 years. Five entrant's journeyed from parts South to the Thornaby Snooker Centre. Play was to be of 1 hour duration, with a Plate event available to the early losers.

Chris Brunskill made breaks of 64 and 48, while Matthew Sutton made a 47. Danny Thompson had only 17 points to spare over Steven Hassack, Scott Casey was only 12 points better than Michael Stephenson, and Jimmy Chambers had 27 points over Jason Robinson, There was high scoring in the second round as Chris Gladwin made an aggregate of 398, Chris Brunskill 434, and Robin Wilson 449 (84 break).

The same high scorer's came through in the quarter finals and were joined by Jimmy Chambers. Upsets seemed on the way in the semi's as Wilson and Brunskill struggled for a long period before coming home to win.

Ormesby Institute were triply represented in the finals—another fine tribute to their coach, Stuart Robinson.

Phillip Wilson was swamped in the Plate by Anthony Bishop, while me main final was a relatively tight affair, which went to the 14 year old dual English Junior Champion, Robin Wilson over Chris Brunskill.

Lincoln

22nd March 1998

A party of 20 players plus supporters travelled to the Breaks Club in Lincoln from Teesside to be joined by a disappointing six others.

The closest finish in the first round was the 11 point win by Danny Thompson over Stephen Hassack. Highest scorer's in the one hour games were Chris Gladwin (34) 314, Anthony Bishop (32,46) 310 and Robin Wilson (60) 285.

Danny tightened his finish in his second round match to only four points and Chris Brunskill, with the aid of a 57 break, took out Chris Gladwin by a margin of 31 points. Robin Wilson (48) scored 365 and John Hartley (32) 338.

Matthew Sutton had 52 & 64 breaks in his quarter final but still lost to Robin Wilson. John Hartley's 34 & 49 breaks still didn't stop Chris Brunskill who responded with a 58 break of his own. Matt Lee—reportedly a billiards convert from snooker only four months ago—was performing well and went into the final to eventually lose to Chris Brunskill, who has beaten Robin Wilson in the semi-final.

Philip Wilson made his second consecutive Plate Final and won it by beating Dean Bavister.
