Sixteen players took part in the one-day tournament held at the Atack Snooker Centre, Nuneaton on Sunday 26th October 1997. The entrants were divided into four groups for the round robin matches of forty-five minutes each with the top two players in each group qualifying for the main event knock-out stages, while the remainder competed in a 'Plate' section.
The groups finished as follows:
A) James Moore Won 3; John Smith Won 2; David Rees Won 1; Alan Raymond Won 0;
A competitive section in which James Moore edged out David Rees by just two points in the last round, to avoid a three way tie.
B) Peter Shelley Won 3; Richard Ingram Won 2; Harry Willis Won 1; David Atack Won 0;
Peter Shelley beat Richard Ingram by forty points in the last round, when both were already assured of qualification.
C) Neal Rewhorn Won 2 +300; John Rees Won 2 +177; Ellis Lloyd Won 2 +17; Eric Fellows Won 0;
Ellis Lloyd kicked of with a great win over Neal Rewhorn, but was subsequently well beaten by John Rees, and lost out on qualification on points count back.
D) Richie Evans Won 2 +103; Stan Day Won 2 +100; Ron Colin Won 2 +20; Chris Hudson Won 0;
Richie Evans took the top qualification spot on a countback of only three points after Ron Colin had sprung a surprise by overcoming Stan Day by fourteen points.

Neal Rewhorn and Stan Day took the eye at the quarter final stage, both winning well, aided by nice centuries. Richie Evans eased past team-mate Richard Ingram. While John Rees, after impressive early form, had run out of steam by this stage.
Rewhorn and James Moore successfully negotiated the semifinal hurdle before contesting a fine final which swung first one way, then the other, with Rewhorn eventually claiming the honours and the £250 first prize.

Ellis Lloyd and David Rees would have been the bookies clear favourites to contest the final, but David Atack scored an excellent semi-final success over Lloyd before succumbing to Rees in the final.
