Early fears that the Individual Billiards Championship would be wound up were allayed by an entry of 22 players for the 2002-03 event, just passing the minimum requirement of twenty. This was helped in no small part by Crewe Pioneer Anglers Club who, despite their lack of success in recent years, always supply an good contingent of enthusiasts for this event. On this occasion they entered three competitors, none of whom survived the first round.
The first round matches generally went to form, with the closest contest seeing Alf Nolan defeat Jackie Sinclair by 57 points and last year's runner-up, Tony Mackinder, came through a tough draw against Geoff Charville.
