All England Junior Championships

Breaks SC, Silver Street, Lincoln

Sunday 24th February 2002 (All games one hour)

The finals of the All England Junior Championships took place in Lincoln on Sunday 24th February, where Robin Wilson claimed a record breaking fifth Under 19's title, Michael Donnelly won his first national title in the Under 16's ranks and Cleveland claimed the Under 19's team event.

Under-19 Championship

The quarter-finals of the Under 19's saw the emerging junior of thefuture Michael Donnelly (Teesside) play the defending champion Robin Wilson (Teesside) and it was Donnelly who started the better with breaks of 89 and 46, while Wilson only could manage an early break of 37. With only twenty minutes remaining in the match a safety exchange started, but it was Donnelly who decided to force the issue, which proved to be vital as he let Wilson in to make breaks of 48 and 34, reducing an initial 70 point deficit and helping him go on to win 324- 266. Peter Gamblin (Lincolnshire) was lucky to win his quarter final against Calvin Daws (Norfolk) as he struggled throughout and edged home 224-216, while the methodical Matthew Sutton (Northants) steadily progressed beating John Hall (Teesside). The final match of the quarter-finals saw the most improved junior player from Norfolk, Jamie Edwards narrowly beat Michael Price, 256-234

In the semi-finals Wilson was in devastating form as on his first scoring visit he made an outstanding 144 break and shortly after made a brilliant 118, further breaks of 59, 39 and 30 saw a shell-shocked Sutton defeated emphatically 457-97. Gamblin, in his match against Edwards, found himself 60 points behind after only three visits. However breaks of 34, 34 and 32 helped him reduce the deficit, eventually moving ahead of his opponent and winning 296-207.

In the final Wilson the four times defending champion met Gamblin, who knew that he would have to be at the top of his game to topple a player who was in the groove after his semi-final win. However Wilson showed his class from start to finish, compiling breaks of 82, 63, 56, 52 and 43 and although Gamblin made a late 49 break it was in vain as Wilson gained an unprecedented fifth title.

Under-16 Championship

In the Under 16's event, Daniel Dobbs (Lincolnshire) played Kyle Cunningham (Teesside) in the opening quarter-final match and although Dobbs started the better gaining a fifty-point lead, with only ten minutes remaining the scores were level. However Dobbs showed a little more experience at the end of the match to win 257-224. Neil Hall (Lincolnshire) played Nathan Mann (Norfolk) and opened with a 32 break to move clear and comfortably progressed into the semi- finals. Favourite for the title, Michael Donnelly showed his intentions from the start as he made breaks of 65, 57, 44 and 43 to destroy his opponent Jason Roberts (Norfolk), 435-122, while after a cagey opening Jason Thomas played well to produce a surprising result in beating Calvin Daws (Norfolk).

Dobbs met Thomas in the first semi-final, and with some small breaks early on, moved clear, going on to clinch his place in the final. Hall played Donnelly in the other semi-final and it was Donnelly who showed some nerves early in the match as Hall matched him shot for shot. However Donnelly made a decisive break of 53 break and further runs of 41 and 33 help him reach his first ever All England final and to eradicate the devastating loss he had at the same stage last year. The final started slowly with neither player gaining a key advantage until Donnelly made two quick fire breaks of 55 and 48. Although Dobbs played some of his best billiards on the day including a break of 43, Donnelly was not to be denied his first ever national title.

Under-19 Team Championship

In the Under 19's team event, Lincolnshire (Breaks S.C), the current holders, played Cleveland (Stockton Riley Club). The draw for opponents seem to be in favour of the Lincolnshire team as Gamblin was matched against Cleveland's strongest player Billy Bousfield. Although Gamblin claimed an early advantage it was Bousfield who produced some of his best-ever billiards compiling excellent breaks of 88 and 70 to win 312-240. The other two players from Cleveland, Craig Murphy and Craig Brown drew strength from Bousfield's play to respectively beat Neil Hall and Robert Hall with breaks of 36, 30 and 25 from Murphy and a 33 break from Brown. The overall match score was a comprehensive win for Cleveland of 961-682.
