There was a record of 22 entries for this year's Norfolk Junior Handicap which was won by eighteen-year-old Darren Noble at the Woodside Snooker Club, who were sponsors of the event. Noble had defeated 14 year old James Roberts (Norwich) 125-12 in the semi-finals, making breaks of 59 and 34. In the other semi-final Jamie Edwards, also a 14 year-old from Norwich, defeated the holder, Gavin Lewis by 125-80. Noble demonstrated his greater experience in the final to win 125-88 in front of a good crowd. Nathan Mann (New Costessey) took the Plate by defeating Scunthorpe's Calvin Daws. Thanks go to referee's Peter Cooper and Clive Scott who officiated throughout the event.
The under-13 knock-out championship attracted thirteen competitors with the youngest just 8 years old. The winner was 10 year-old Bruce Welham who defeated Jacob Moriaty (Castle Acre) 83-66 in the 30- minute final. In the semi-finals Welham had defeated Robert Crisp (Narborough) 53-48, while Moriaty had beaten Rickie Easter (West Acre) 66-49.
The under-19 Championship had just six entries, from which Darren Noble (Narborough) emerged triumphant. He narrowly defeated Julian Zalums 122-113 in the final round. The semi-finals had seen Noble come through another close match against Julian´s brother, Leon Zalums who he defeated 113-100. Julian Zalums had reached the final with an even narrower win over Adrian Hubbard (Swaffham) 119-117 in his semi-final.
After three matches, Mid-Norfolk have established a one-point lead over Norwich "A" at the top of Division One. Phillip Welham has been in good form at this early stage in the season, having produced two century breaks with a best of 133. Fos Wilson is the only other player to record a century so far, with a run of 108.
In the second division, Spalding have a one point advantage over Huntingdon 147, in what looks like being a very strong and competitive division. Spalding's Mick Johnson and Arthur Reeve have been particularly impressive, with Johnson making the only century so far with exactly 100.
The annual West Acre billiards marathon took place over a two day period and raised a total of £605 for the new village hall. When complete, this will provide a new two-table venue for the West Acre billiards club. The 26 players involved in the marathon ranged in ages from 8 to 68.
