Robby Foldvari won the Commercial Club Open Billiards tournament which was held 15th-17th June in Albury. The event, with 24 entrants used a double elimination format to qualify for the quarter final knockouts. Foldvari defeated the reigning Australian Open Billiards champion Matthew Bolton 1084-833 in the four hour final. Bolton made the score look a little more respectable by playing out time with a break of 201 unfinished, but would have needed to carry on for the highest break of the tournament to win the match. This honour also went to Foldvari with a run of 434 made against Joe Minici in the quarter final. Joe was actually leading 286-85 at the start of the break, which took over 45 minutes to complete. Foldvari followed this with another massive effort in his semi-final against Steve Mifsud, compiling a run of 431. Australian Open Snooker champion Steve Mifsud had shown that his talents extend beyond the potting game by not only qualifying for the quarter finals but also defeating Neil Croft who was runner-up in the Australian Open Billiards last year. However, Steve was outclassed by Foldvari, who averaged 84.2 in their the three hour match.
Group winners from the double elimination stage were: Robby Foldvari, Neil Croft, John Schenk, and Matthew Bolton. Qualifiers through the repechage draws were Steve Mifsud, Joe Minici, Nino Psaila and the New Zealand champion Wayne Carey.
David Kilpatrick won the 2001 Australian Capital Territory (ACT) State Billiard Championship on 22nd July by defeating Bob Fraser 1230-545 in the four hour final. Kilpatrick made the tournament high break of 132 and is regarded as being in a league of his own in Canberra. He played consistently and brilliantly throughout the tournament, reaching the maximum 15 hazards seemingly at every visit at the table, building precision-like breaks with brilliant potting. In the three-hour semi-finals Kilpatrick beat John Ross and Fraser had defeated Syd Campbell.
The BSAACT is a non-profit sporting body, dedicated to the promotion of cue sports in the Australian Capital Territory. It was established in 1948 and has a long history of inter-club competition in Canberra.
