Huddersfield are top team

Huddersfield took the Yorkshire Billiards team championship by beating fellow contenders Wharfedale 5-2 in the final match of the season at Guiseley; while their other rivals Bradford were being beaten 7-0 by Huddersfield's second team. David Peaker, in his best match of the season, beat Jack Parker 200-80 with breaks of 50 and 39 to put Huddersfield on their way before Steve Crosland levelled the match when he beat Tony Clegg 200-50 with a top break of 67. In the final game Brian Cousen had a tussle with Ronnie Haigh, leading 115-96 at one stage, before stretching his lead with a break of 43 to win 200-102. The victorious Huddersfield squad also included Ted Warren and Steve Whiteley.

Band stops play

A chance conversation between David Peaker and John Hartley resulted in a 5-strong Teesside junior team from Redcar WMC travelling to Linthwaite Methodists Hall in Huddersfield to take on a side from the local Sunday League on Saturday 30th June. The home side also fielded two juniors in Matthew Peaker (16) and Gregg Leach (15) and both were successful as their team finished winners of the 150-up games by 12-3. However, the matches had started rather shakily as a brass band marched outside the games-room and the building shook to such an extent that play was suspended for several minutes! Not deterred by their defeat, the Teesside team were looking forward to arranging a return match in the near future.
