The fifth and final tournament in the Junior Ranking Series was staged at the Gateshead Snooker Centre on Sunday 1st April 2001. The 37 competitors were mainly from Teesside, but amongst those who came from further afield was Peter Gamblin who travelled from Lincoln with the intention of holding on to the position he had established this season as the No.1 ranked Junior. He received a bye in the preliminary round where John Hall put up the best performance, breaks of 46, 36 and 34 helping him to a 355-143 win.
When Gamblin did get into action, he struggled against James Clare, eventually getting though by 239-201. Robin Wilson had no such problems, top breaks of 86, 70, 57 and 46 taking him to a 444 aggregate and an easy win against Dominic Mulhall. However, Darren Clark had the top score of the first round with 464 (43, 41, 39, 35) against Carl Watts, who also amassed a creditable 264 points including a 32 break in a high scoring match.
The closest game in the second round was the encounter between Danny Beagrie and his Middlesbrough Riley's team-mate, Michael Donnelly who had made a break of 56 in his previous match. Beagrie had recorded his first victory against Donnelly a few weeks earlier in the Under-16 English Championship and proved it was no fluke by repeating the performance in this match. Although Donnelly held a narrow advantage for most of the game, a late break of 42 by Beagrie proved decisive, and he finished a 287-261 winner. There were no surprises in the remaining matches with a good performance from Craig Murphy who had a best break of 69 in defeating Dean Richardson 349- 261. Darren Clark also had a 64 in his win over Steve Hassack. Danny Beagrie held an advantage of almost 100 points over John Hall after the first 30 minutes of their quarter-final match, but Hall fought back strongly and with just three minutes to go had edged 3 points in front. In an exciting finish, Beagrie held his nerve to edge home 299- 289.
Despite making an aggregate of 315 points, Craig Murphy still finished second best to Robin Wilson who ran in a total of 453, including breaks of 76, 58 and 52. Peter Gamblin lost out in a close match against Darren Clark, but returned to Lincoln with the knowledge that he had done enough to retain his No.1 position in the rankings. The remaining semifinal place went to Billy Bousfield.
Bousfield, who had been playing solid if unspectacular billiards all day, found that this was more than sufficient to defeat Danny Beagrie in an unexpectedly one-sided semi-final match. Beagrie, looking a different player to his previous rounds, didn't even manage a break of 20! Meanwhile, Robin Wilson gave Darren Clark no chance as he opened up a gap of over 100 points (160-53) after just 20 minutes play. He finished with a magnificent break of 126 to overshadow what may otherwise have been considered a good performance by Clark, who ran in breaks of 43, 35 and 33 but still finished over 200 points in arrears. The final started slowly with Billy Bousfield staying in touch with Robin Wilson until a break of 88 opened a gap which he would never close. Thereafter, Wilson, adding runs of 58, 41 and 54 cruised to a comfortable win. By this victory, Wilsonwho had entered only three of this year's tournaments and had succeeded in winning them all elevated himself to No.2 spot in the rankings.
