The 1999 Ladies World Billiards Championship, open to any WLBSA member, attracted an entry of eight playersalthough the international element was restricted to Northern Ireland's Karen Corr (now living in Bourne, Lincs.) and Jan Hughes who also lives in England but qualifies for Wales. Entries were encouraged by the event preceding the Ladies Snooker Championship at the same venue, and perhaps also the prize money going down to £75 for the loser of the quarter-final, giving a reasonable guaranteed return for the £30 entry fee of the eight competitors.
Karen Corr started the one-day event as hot favourite, with only she and Emma Bonney (Essex), who is World No.9 in the snooker rankings, having any known form at billiards.
Playing a straight knock-out format, all matches were 1½ hours duration. In the first round, Corr and Bonney both advanced at the expense of Sue Selby (Haywards Heath) and Gaye Jones (Colchester). They were joined in the semi-finals by Sarah Kingswell and Kelly Fisher (Ealing) who defeated Jan Hughes and Nicola Beckley respectively.
Kelly Fisher proved to be the "dark horse" of the competition, defeating Bonney in the semi's and then taking Karen Corr all the way in the final. With just 10 minutes to go and training by 7 points, Corr produced a break of 85, the highest of the competition, which finished seconds before the final bell. This was enough to win her the title and a cheque for £500. Kelly Fisher, who won the Ladies Snooker Championship last year and was also voted the WSA Ladies Player of the Year, took £300 as runner-up. Final scores : Corr 354; Fisher 276.
