BRITISH JUNIOR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

The new Junior Team Championships was open to teams of three players under 18 years of age. The event was split into two qualifying areas who would each provide a team to contest the final. All games were decided by aggregate team score.

Southern Region

The Southern Region attracted an entry of seven teams which were split into two groups playing in League format. Lincolnshire "A" were successful against Norfolk´s "A" and "B" teams, while Northants came out top against Lincolnshire "B" and the Norfolk "C" and "D" teams. In the deciding match between the group winners, Northamptonshire qualified for the Southern area without losing a game, after beating Lincolnshire "A" 3-0. Highest aggregate score in the 30 minute games came from Matthew Sutton who made 204. Matthew also made the highest break with 54.

Northern Region

Ten teams entered from the Northern section, where a knock-out format was used to determine their winner, and matches were arranged to be one hour duration. In the preliminary round, Elm Tree, who where drawn to play away against the Hemlington "B" team, had the unusual distinction of claiming their match when the home side failed to turn up ! They then eliminated North Ormesby "A" by just 2 points, as Lee McKenna narrowly failed to overturn an 142 point deficit in the final game.

Robin Wilson was in fine form, knocking in a 60+ break in every round to see his team from Ormesby through to the Regional Final. Here they overcame Elm Tree by 123 points, again largely due to Wilson who made breaks of 62, 52, 45, 36 and 35 the final game which he won 382-154. The best one hour aggregate was also made by Wilson who rattled in 464 points in his first round match.

The Final

The regional winners met at the Breaks Snooker Club, Lincoln on 21st March, following on from the third of the Junior ranking events. Dean Bavister set the Northants team off to a flying start with a comprehensive 153 point victory over Mark Coates. Fraser Adams added to his side´s aggregate advantage with a 39 point win, leaving Robin Wilson facing a deficit of 192 points entering the final heat against Matthew Sutton. Always likely to be an hopeless task, Sutton concluded an emphatic victory for his team, winning the heat by 30 points and putting together a break of 68 in the process.
