MIDLAND COUNTIES BILLIARDS LEAGUE. 1995/96

RESULTS TO 14TH NOVEMBER 1995

Title-holders Derby began the new campaign with a tough encounter against neighbouring Nottingham which, after a hard-fought battle, the Champions edged by the odd game in nine. Home captain David Rees was unbeaten on the day, but the unlucky Ken Hobbs lost all three of his games by such narrow margins as 10, 8 and 6 points.

It's good to see Neal Rewhorn back in the league and his presence was the decisive factor in Nuneaton's solid 5-4 victory at Kidderminster. Rewhorn kept a clean sheet but needed a late century to edge out John Smith by just seventeen points, while Trevor Scott held the home side together with two successes.

Nottingham became the early season pace-setters when, following their opening game reversal, they bounced to whip Rugby 'B' by 7-2. Both Jamie Moore and Tom Martin were unbeaten in this match, with the latter being particularly impressive in his opening tie against Harry Willis. Here Martin accumulated an excellent one hour total of 479, sparked by breaks of 52, 58 and 148, the century being the players best run in the league to date and a very respectable contender for the seasons high break award. Geoff Barrett did well for the visitors, for, despite winning only once, he pressed both Martin and Moore all the way.

Another battle royal ended with Kidderminster squeezing home 5-4 at Rugby, with the visitors being indebted to Trevor Scott and John Smith who claimed two wins apiece.

However the star of the show was undoubtedly Rugby's Alan Marsden, who not only won all three games but cracked in his maiden Midland League century with an effort of 109.

Most unusually Ellis Lloyd drew a blank in this match, although he looked all over the winner against John Smith until the League Secretary nosed just ten points ahead after late runs of 42 and 77 unfinished.

Yet another close match resulted in Nuneaton lowering the colours of the Champions when they eased out Derby by the odd game. In this encounter Neal Rewhorn and Alan Orton for the winners, and Stan Day and David Rees of the visitors all won two games each, with Day being another competitor to reach his first Midland League century with exactly 100.

A good indication of the close competitiveness of the league may be obtained by analysing the results of the five matches played so far. After just five matches only two of the seven teams in the league remain unbeaten - Nuneaton with two favourable 5-4 results and Stoke-on-Trent, who are yet to play. On the individual front twenty-one players have appeared, but only one of these, Alan Marsden (played 3, won 3) has yet to taste defeat. I'm certainly not going to make any rash forecasts regarding who are likely to finish up as champions this season!!
